My name is Lauren Coleman and I am the Children’s Ministry Director at Church of the Word. I’ve been attending Church of the Word since summer of 2014 and have been on staff leading Children’s Ministry since October the same year. I am so excited to be here serving our families. My husband and I have a five-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter. We definitely know how busy (but also joyful!) parenting can be in this day and age. With God’s guidance, I hope our church can be a place of rest, hope, and growth in Him as we navigate His plans for us in this season of life. We at Church of the Word are here to support you as you “raise up your children in the way they should go” (Proverbs 22:6) as they (and you!) learn to have a livelong, thriving relationship with Jesus.
The Children & Family Ministry at Church of the Word welcomes families to join us in encountering and sharing Jesus. We offer Sunday School and nursery during our 10:30 service and summer programs such as Vacation Bible School, 5-day Club, and Preschool Camp. We also offer Parents Nights Out, seasonal festivals, and family service projects such as Operation Christmas Child.
Children are welcome to join our services at any time of the year and parents are welcome to visit Church of the Word to see what’s happening.
Sunday School is available during our 10:30 am service for members and visitors in grades Pre-K through 5th. This year we are using the Hands-On Bible Curriculum. This is an interactive lesson plan designed to engage thought, discussion, and all the senses, and is a great fit for a big group of all ages. Each week children will take home a “Growing Together” page with a memory verse and lesson to discuss. Our current curriculum focuses on the lives of Ruth and David. Through role playing, games, and visuals, kids dive into both the Old and New Testaments, connect the readings to Jesus and to their own lives, and learn to live out God’s truths.
On the 2nd Sunday of each month, we offer a Family Friendly worship service. Children and youth stay in service to experience the liturgy and they also get to come forward to hear a children’s sermon. We hope you can join us after the service for fellowship.
Nursery care is provided for children age 3 and under during the Sunday 10:30 worship service. We always welcome children of all ages to participate in worship, but there is a nursery upstairs if parents wish to take their child there at the beginning of service or just during the sermon. It is a quiet place to change or feed a baby and a space for squirmy little ones to run around and play. We have paid and volunteer staff who are screened and trained to work with small children, and a few of them are parents themselves.
Call the church office (703-754-9673) to confirm that childcare is offered during events offered on other special events or evenings.
Wednesdays @ the Word: During Lent, we offer Wednesday Night lessons. We start with enjoying a light meal together at 6pm, then break into groups of adults, youth, and children. Currently, the children are learning Bible verses to memorize along with corresponding Bible lessons, crafts, and games. The evening wraps up around 8:15. All are welcome, and registrations are available on the hall counter.
Summer Camps: We had a blast at our SonSurf Beach Bash VBS in June! Along with Bible Stories, catchy tunes, creative crafts, and active outside games, we also integrated a Service time in our morning to think about how we could help others. We decorated “Gospel Rocks” to hide around town, painted magnets to distribute with meals for the Redemption Diner ministry, and took up donations of school supplies for our Youth Group to take with them on their mission to Nashville.
Protecting God’s Children: Another training we offer focuses on recognition and prevention of child sexual abuse. This course is a requirement for staff, Vestry, and volunteers who work with children and youth, but it also gives helpful tools for parents with kids of all ages. Our next one is on September 24th at 12:30pm. Please sign up on the hall counter or by contacting the office. Lunch provided.
