Another conference is over. Yet an other gathering of the faithful has come to an end. But what did we achieve in Pittsburgh?
Perhaps the first thing to remember is that gathering in the name of the Lord itself is an important act of obedience. Remember how the writer to the Hebrews wrote, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb 10:25 NIV).
Two years ago we held a similar conference in Plano, Texas. It was an emotional time as many reacted to the decisions taken at General Convention. People were fearful, disappointed, and concerned for the future.
This time was different. Many observers had predicted that we would “get over it” and that the same-sex agenda simply would be absorbed into the Episcopal Church ethos. But that hasn’t happened! Instead of going away, we have become more determined and stronger. Pittsburgh was not an angry gathering. Instead, the major focus was on mission and the trustworthiness of the Word of God.
There were widespread predictions that we would all fragment; but again, this was a different conference. Instead of more pieces, there were remarkable demonstrations of a stronger union, a new coming together. It was moving to see leaders of the Reformed Episcopal Church who reminded us of the cost of splintering, and pledged to walk with us in a united witness for Jesus Christ.
It was a truly global gathering. I will never forget the picture of the Global South primates sitting in front of us, sharing their testimonies, and answering provocative questions with sensitivity and grace. They were truly our “grand fathers in God.” It was a privilege to have them among us, reminding us that those who stand with us are far, far more numerous than those who oppose us.
Finally, Pittsburgh was a call to renewed commitment and action. It was a truly historic moment. Jesus is Lord!
