DISCUSS HOW TO MINISTER TOGETHER

Presiding Bishop Offers to Meet Global South Visitors
11/02/2006

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has invited four Global South primates who will be visiting the United States this month to meet with her to discuss how best to minister together to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals.

The Most Rev. Peter Akinola, Primate of Nigeria; the Most Rev. Drexel Gomez, Primate of the West Indies; the Most Rev. Benjamin Nzimbi, Primate of Kenya; and the Most Rev. Justice Akrofi, Primate of West Africa, will be in Falls Church, Va., Nov. 13-15 to attend the meeting of the trustees of Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF), an organization chartered by the Anglican Communion Network. All four primates serve as ARDF trustees.

“Considering the difficulty and expense of such a journey, I hope that during your visit you might be willing to pay a call on me, so that we might begin to build toward such a missional relationship,” Bishop Jefferts Schori wrote Nov. 1, her first day as Presiding Bishop. “I would hope we might see the common interest we all have for seeing those Goals met, as they provide a concrete image of the Reign of God in our own day.”

Last week, the four primates offered to meet on Nov. 15 with the bishops, chancellors and standing committee presidents from the eight Episcopal dioceses that petitioned Archbishop Rowan Williams last July for alternate primatial oversight. They characterized that meeting as an opportunity for the American dioceses to express their needs directly to Global South leaders.

None of the four primates has responded to the Presiding Bishop’s invitation at this time.
