2006 February 07
As you may have heard, Church of the Holy Spirit (Ashburn, Virginia) has come under the episcopal oversight of the Rt. Rev. Benezeri Kisembo in Uganda and has left the Episcopal Church USA. Church of the Holy Spirit held a congregational meeting to decide on these steps on Sunday, February 5. The congregation voted unanimously in favor of these actions.
Church of the Holy Spirit is a daughter church of Truro. Truro planted Church of the Holy Spirit in 2001. Truro members may recall, the Rev. Clancy Nixon served Truro as a deacon before being ordained a priest and becoming the founding pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit.
The selection of Ashburn for this church plant was intentional. Ashburn is located in the greater Dulles area in northern Virginia. With one of the fastest growing populations in the entire USA, it is a prime area for growing new congregations.
Yet, Church of the Holy Spirit’s growth and ministry have been hampered by the current crisis in the Episcopal Church. Jim Oakes, senior warden of Truro Church, said, “We deeply regret the fragmentation of the Episcopal Church that has been occurring since the 2003 General Convention. The departure of the Church of the Holy Spirit is another chapter in that sad story. We support Clancy and his congregation, and we will continue to affirm and support them as members of the Truro family.”
