Four parishes in the Diocese of Connecticut have announced that they will affiliate with CANA, the North American Branch of the Anglican Province of Nigeria.
Sources tell VOL that Trinity Church, Bristol is now a member of CANA (as of today) with as many as four more in the pipeline ready to join the Virginia-based church. Bishop Martyn Minns told VOL that he is working on a statement.
None of the four are affiliated with the Connecticut 6 parishes that are in conflict with Connecticut Bishop Drew Smith.
The Rev. Donald Helmandollar rector of Trinity Church did not return phone calls. Apparently Bishop Smith is not aware of the move by the four parishes.
A large portion of the congregation of Trinity is made up of former members of St. John's, Bristol who left when the Rev. Mark Hansen was inhibited and deposed from his parish by Bishop Smith.
A source told VOL that Trinity took a confirming vote at their annual meeting in January to leave by May 1. The first vote was at least a year ago. The second vote confirmed the first. Both votes were overwhelming to leave The Episcopal Church.
More news as it unfolds.
